Tower Crane to be Lifted at Mutual of Omaha Construction Site Beginning Saturday, Aug. 3

Construction continues on Mutual of Omaha’s downtown headquarters, which will be the tallest building in Omaha once completed. Finance and insurance companies already rule the skyline – the First National Bank Tower (left of the construction) is the city’s highest skyscraper.

(OMAHA, Neb.) There will be a surge of activity on the construction site of Mutual of Omaha’s future headquarters in downtown Omaha this weekend, as the project’s giant tower crane is lifted higher to accommodate continued vertical progress on the future skyscraper. The work to lift the tower crane is scheduled to begin Saturday, Aug. 3.

Construction on the shear core of the building is currently within 70 feet of the tower crane boom. For the building’s core to keep climbing, four additional tower sections will be added to the crane. In preparation for the crane height increase, embeds were placed in the exterior core wall for the tower crane to attach for additional stability.

“This is a critical step in the construction of a building of this magnitude and not something you see every day here in Omaha,” said Brian Krouse, Director of Construction for Lanoha Real Estate Company, the developer for the project. “We are excited for the continued growth of Mutual of Omaha’s new home and honored to be part of such an important project for the city.”

The following steps will take place to raise the crane:

  • Install a climber: A climbing frame or top climber is fitted between the mast’s top and the slewing unit (the mechanism that allows the top of the crane to swing/rotate).
  • Balance the counterweight: A weight is hung from the jib to balance the counterweight.
  • Detach the slewing unit: The slewing unit is detached from the mast’s top.
  • Push the slewing unit up: Hydraulic rams in the climber push the slewing unit up 20 feet.
  • Lift a mast section: The crane operator uses the crane to lift another 20-foot mast section into the gap created by the climber.
  • Bolt into place: The new section is bolted into place, making the crane 20 feet taller.
  • Secure to the building: Ties or collars are attached to the tower section and secured to the building structure at predetermined intervals.

Additional Project Details
Mutual of Omaha’s headquarters construction project remains on track. The concrete shear core walls have been poured through Level 17, and crews are working on Levels 8 and 9 of the concrete podium floors.

This puts the skyscraper’s core at the level of the “sky lobby” that will welcome Mutual of Omaha employees from the parking facility. The multi-level concept on floors 16-20 will feature food services with diverse culinary offerings, a fitness center, employee wellness services, concierge technical support services and flexible conference and meeting spaces. The sky lobby floors will also feature landscaped outdoor terraces with sweeping views and outdoor dining, meeting and fitness spaces for Mutual of Omaha employees.

Photo and Video Opportunities: Media are invited to record the tower crane activity from outside of the construction site’s fenced area. About Mutual of Omaha’s New Headquarters
In January 2022, Mutual of Omaha announced plans to develop a corporate headquarters facility in downtown Omaha. Located on the west end of the Gene Leahy Mall, Mutual of Omaha officially launched the construction phase with a groundbreaking ceremony in January 2023. At 677 feet, the building will feature 44 floors, making it the tallest building in the region. At approximately 800,000 square feet (compared to Mutual of Omaha’s current 1.7-million-square-foot Midtown Omaha campus), the building will be designed for hybrid work. Lanoha Real Estate Company in Omaha is the developer for the project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
