Join us in celebrating Endangered Species Day by learning about some ways you can help protect endangered species. Check out these tips from the Endangered Species Coalition and hear about some conservation successes in the recent years from Wild Kingdom host Peter Gros.
- Study your local endangered species and share your findings with your friends and family. There are a lot of great things happening at your local accredited zoo or aquarium.
- Take a trip to a national wildlife refuge, park or other open space. These protected lands are home to native wildlife, birds, fish and plants. Take your visit a step further by volunteering at your local nature center or wildlife refuge.
- Create a wildlife friendly environment at home. Use garbage cans with locking lids. Keep your pets indoors, and secure pet doors at night so wild animals don’t enter your home.
- Invite native insects like bees and butterflies to pollinate your garden. By growing native plants, you’re providing food and shelter for wildlife. Learn how to start your own wildlife garden.
- Reconsider herbicides and pesticides. They may keep your yard in shape, but they are hazardous pollutants that affect wildlife at many levels. Learn more about how pesticides affect wildlife with tips from the National Wildlife Federation.
- Stay vigilant while driving and watch for wildlife crossing the road.
- Recycle and purchase sustainable products.
- Never purchase products made from threatened or endangered species. Check out these buyer tips from the World Wildlife Fund.
- Never harass wildlife. It’s cruel and illegal.
- Protect wildlife habitats by supporting parks, wildlife refuges and other open spaces.
